NADRA Divorce Certificate: How to Apply and Verify

How to obtain the computerised divorce certificate, what it is needed for, and how to verify one you have been given.

Muhammad August 30, 2026 ~7 min read
Quick answer: The computerised divorce certificate is issued by NADRA after the divorce has been registered with the union council. You apply at a NADRA centre with the union council divorce certificate, your CNIC and the relevant particulars. It is the version institutions and foreign missions generally require, because it is verifiable against NADRA's records.

There are two documents people call a divorce certificate: the one the union council issues, and the computerised version NADRA produces from that record. The second is the one a foreign embassy, an employer or a bank will usually want, because it can be verified. You cannot get it without the first.

The order matters

You cannot skip to step four. NADRA issues the computerised certificate from the union council record, so if the divorce was never registered there, no computerised certificate can be produced - see the union council process.

Strictly sequential. NADRA produces the computerised certificate from the union council record, so registration cannot be skipped.

Applying for the computerised certificate

  1. Ensure the divorce is registered with the union council and the certificate has issued.
  2. Visit a NADRA registration centre, or use the online facility where available for your case.
  3. Provide the union council divorce certificate or the registration particulars.
  4. Provide your CNIC, valid and unexpired.
  5. Provide the former spouse's particulars, including CNIC number where known.
  6. Complete the application and pay the prescribed fee.
  7. Collect the certificate and take certified copies.

Requirements can differ between centres and change over time, so check the current position on nadra.gov.pk or by calling the centre before travelling.

Updating your marital status

A separate but related step: your NADRA record shows marital status, and it does not update itself.

  • Apply to modify your CNIC record with the divorce documentation.
  • Do it promptly. A record showing you as married when you are divorced causes problems at remarriage and in immigration applications.
  • Check what appears on the updated card and family registration record.
  • Children's records may also need attention where custody arrangements have changed.

Overseas Pakistanis frequently discover an inconsistency at the worst time - a spouse visa application where the Pakistani record shows a marriage that a foreign court has dissolved. Keep the Pakistani record consistent with your actual status, and do it early.

Verifying a certificate you have been given

If someone presents you with a divorce certificate - a prospective spouse, or a counterparty in a property matter - verification is reasonable and sensible.

  1. Check it is the computerised version, which carries verification features, rather than only a union council paper.
  2. Check the particulars - names, CNIC numbers, dates - against the person's identity documents.
  3. Verify through NADRA using the verification facilities available.
  4. Cross-check the union council record where doubt remains.
  5. Be alert to alterations - inconsistent fonts, mismatched dates, missing seals.

Forged marital status documents circulate, and the consequences of relying on one - particularly before a marriage - are serious. Verification is not an insult; it is ordinary diligence.

Using it abroad

For immigration, foreign remarriage or overseas legal proceedings, expect a further chain:

  1. Computerised NADRA certificate obtained.
  2. Attestation, commonly through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  3. Legalisation or embassy attestation for the destination country.
  4. Certified translation where required.

Each step follows the previous one, so start as soon as the certificate issues rather than close to a deadline. Where one party is overseas, see divorce for overseas Pakistanis.

Common problems

  • No union council registration. Nothing can be issued; complete that first.
  • Name mismatches between the certificate and the CNIC, which must be reconciled.
  • Former spouse's CNIC unknown, which complicates the application - supply what particulars you have.
  • Old divorces where union council records are incomplete or the council has been reorganised.
  • Foreign divorce only, with no Pakistani registration - a frequent problem for overseas Pakistanis.
  • Lost certificate, which can be reissued on application.

The foreign-divorce case deserves emphasis. A decree obtained abroad does not automatically resolve the Pakistani record where the marriage was registered in Pakistan. If you plan to remarry in Pakistan or need consistent records, deal with the Pakistani side properly rather than assuming the foreign decree suffices.

Before you remarry

If you are planning to remarry, work through this first. It is the point at which every gap in the record surfaces at once.

  • Do you hold the union council divorce certificate? Not a talaq deed - the certificate.
  • Do you hold the computerised NADRA certificate?
  • Does your NADRA record show your correct marital status?
  • If divorced abroad, is the Pakistani position resolved?
  • Has the statutory period actually expired from the date notice was given?
  • Are certified copies available to give the nikah registrar?

A nikah registrar will ask for proof that any previous marriage ended, and a marriage contracted while a previous one subsists creates serious complications - see second marriage requirements.

Keeping your records consistent

After a divorce, several records exist in different places and they do not synchronise themselves.

The bank and pension nominations are the ones people forget entirely. A former spouse left as nominee on an account or policy can create a genuine dispute later, and updating it takes minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a NADRA divorce certificate?

Ensure the divorce is registered with the union council and that certificate has issued, then apply at a NADRA registration centre with the union council certificate, your CNIC and the former spouse's particulars, and pay the prescribed fee.

Can I get a NADRA certificate without union council registration?

No. NADRA issues the computerised certificate from the union council record, so if the divorce was never registered there, no computerised certificate can be produced.

What is the difference between the union council and NADRA certificates?

The union council issues the original certificate on registration. NADRA produces a computerised version from that record, which is verifiable and is generally what institutions and foreign missions require.

Do I need to update my CNIC after divorce?

Yes, and it does not happen automatically. Apply to modify your NADRA record with the divorce documentation, because a record showing you as married causes problems at remarriage and in immigration applications.

How do I verify someone's divorce certificate?

Check it is the computerised version, compare the particulars against their identity documents, verify through NADRA's facilities and cross-check the union council record where doubt remains.

I divorced abroad. Do I need a Pakistani certificate?

Where the marriage was registered in Pakistan, a foreign decree does not automatically resolve the Pakistani record. If you plan to remarry in Pakistan or need consistent records, deal with the Pakistani registration properly.

How long does the NADRA certificate take to issue?

It is an administrative application once the union council registration is complete, but timing varies by centre. Apply as soon as you hold the union council certificate rather than waiting until you need it for a deadline.

Can I apply for the NADRA certificate if my former spouse will not cooperate?

The application is based on the registered divorce record rather than on the other party's participation. Supply the union council certificate and whatever particulars of the former spouse you hold.

Do I need to update my children's records too?

Family registration records may need attention, particularly where custody arrangements have changed. Check what the family registration certificate shows and update it alongside your own marital status.
