How to Get an NTN Number Online Through FBR IRIS (Step by Step)

The complete walkthrough for obtaining an NTN through IRIS, the requirements that block most attempts, and what to do once you have it.

Quick answer: Register on the IRIS portal with your CNIC, a mobile registered in your own name and a personal email. For an individual, your CNIC is your NTN - no separate number is issued, and there is no government fee. Registration is usually completed the same day. The most common blocker by far is a mobile number not registered against the applicant's own CNIC.

Getting an NTN is one of the simplest interactions with FBR and one of the most misunderstood. A small industry exists charging people for it, and much of the confusion comes from not knowing that for an individual the CNIC itself serves as the NTN. This walkthrough covers the actual steps and the two or three things that stop people completing them.

What you need before you start

ItemRequirementCommon failure
CNICValid and unexpiredExpired card
Mobile numberRegistered against your own CNICSIM in a relative's name - the top blocker
Email addressPersonal, long-termWork email you will lose access to
AddressCurrent residential or businessIncomplete details
Source of incomeEmployer NTN, or business detailsNot known in advance
Bank accountIn your own nameNot required to start, needed later

Sort the SIM out first. Verification sends a code to a number that must be registered against your CNIC, and a number in a spouse's, parent's or employer's name fails every time. Check ownership before you begin rather than discovering it mid-registration.

The registration steps

  1. Go to the IRIS portal directly at the official address - type it rather than following a link from a search advertisement.
  2. Select registration for an unregistered person.
  3. Enter your CNIC and personal particulars exactly as on the card - spelling, order of names, father's name.
  4. Enter your mobile number and email.
  5. Enter the verification codes sent to both.
  6. Complete address and source-of-income details, including employer or business particulars.
  7. Submit and receive your IRIS credentials.
  8. Log in and change the password, then store it somewhere you will still have in five years.
  9. Complete your profile - bank details, address, anything left blank.
CNIC your identifier Verify mobile + email Profile address + income File the return makes you a filer
Four stages. Mobile verification against your own CNIC is where most attempts fail, so sort the SIM out first.

For an individual: your CNIC is your NTN

This is the point that causes most confusion. For an individual there is no separate NTN number. Your CNIC number serves that function.

Consequences:

  • Nothing to memorise beyond your CNIC.
  • No fee for the registration itself.
  • Nobody can "get you an NTN" that you could not obtain yourself in twenty minutes.
  • Verification of your NTN uses your CNIC - see NTN verification.

If someone quotes you a fee described as a government charge for an individual NTN, it does not exist. Paying for assistance with the form is a legitimate choice; paying a supposed government fee is not.

Registering as a business or company

Sole proprietor - registers personally and adds business details:

  • Business name and nature of activity.
  • Business address with proof - tenancy or ownership document and a utility bill.
  • Business bank account details.

Company or AOP - registers as an entity:

  • Incorporation certificate and SECP registration number, or the partnership deed for an AOP.
  • CNICs of directors, partners or members.
  • Proof of business premises.
  • Authorisation for the principal officer.

Note that directors and partners still need their own individual registrations. Registering the entity does not register the people behind it - see FBR and IRIS registration for the full picture.

When registration fails

ProblemCauseFix
Mobile verification failsSIM not in your nameUse your own SIM, or transfer ownership
Particulars do not matchSpelling differs from CNICEnter exactly as on the card
Already registeredAn employer or agent registered youRecover access; do not register twice
Email not receivedSpam filter or typoCheck spam; verify the address
CNIC expiredCard not renewedRenew at NADRA first
Locked out laterOld email or numberUpdate contact details properly

The "already registered" case is more common than expected. Employers sometimes register staff without telling them. Recover the existing account rather than creating a second, which causes further problems.

After you have the NTN

Registration alone achieves less than people assume.

  • File your annual return, even a nil return where required. Filing is what makes you a filer, not registration.
  • Check the ATL after filing to confirm your status - see the ATL check.
  • Keep contact details current, since notices go to the registered email and mobile.
  • Check your IRIS inbox periodically rather than waiting for an alert.
  • Keep withholding certificates through the year.
  • Estimate your liability with the salary tax calculator.

The gap between registering and filing is where most people lose money. Registered non-filers still pay higher withholding on banking, property and vehicle transactions, so the return is what actually delivers the benefit - see filer vs non-filer.

Who actually needs an NTN

You areNeed one?Why
Salaried above the taxable thresholdYesFiling obligation and filer status
Freelancer or consultantYesIncome is taxable; concessions need compliance
Sole trader or business ownerYesBusiness income and invoicing
Buying or selling propertyStrongly advisableNon-filers pay materially higher advance tax
Buying a vehicleStrongly advisableSame rate differential
Salaried below the thresholdOften worth itFiler status saves on banking and transactions
Company or AOPYes, as an entityPlus individual registrations for the people

The fourth and fifth rows are why many people register who owe no tax at all. The difference between filer and non-filer advance tax on a property or vehicle transaction frequently exceeds what filing a nil return costs in effort - see filer vs non-filer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get an NTN number online in Pakistan?

Register on the FBR IRIS portal with your CNIC, a mobile number registered against your own CNIC and a personal email, verify both, complete your address and income source details and submit. You then receive IRIS credentials.

Is there a fee for getting an NTN?

No government fee applies to individual registration through IRIS, and your CNIC serves as your NTN. Paying someone to complete the form is a choice; a supposed government fee for an individual NTN does not exist.

What is my NTN if I am an individual?

Your CNIC number. No separate number is issued for individuals, which is why verification is done using the CNIC.

Why does my mobile verification keep failing?

Because the SIM must be registered against your own CNIC. A number in a spouse's, parent's or employer's name will not verify, and this is the single most common blocker.

I think I am already registered but never did it. What now?

Employers and agents sometimes register staff without telling them. Recover access to the existing registration rather than creating a second one, which creates further problems.

Does having an NTN make me a filer?

No. Registration opens your account; filing the annual return is what puts you on the Active Taxpayers List and gives you filer withholding rates.

Do company directors need their own NTN?

Yes. A company or AOP registers as an entity, but directors, partners and members still need their own individual registrations.

Can I register for an NTN from abroad?

The portal is accessible from abroad, but mobile verification requires a number registered against your own CNIC, which is the practical obstacle for many overseas Pakistanis. Plan for that before starting.

What if I have no source of income yet?

You can still register, and many people do purely to obtain filer status ahead of a property or vehicle transaction. Filing a nil return where required is what puts you on the Active Taxpayers List.

Do I need a business bank account to register a sole proprietorship?

It is not needed to begin registration but you will need it for the business to operate properly, and banks will ask for your NTN when opening it, so the sequence matters.
